Is COVID-19 a coagulopathy or an endotheliopathy?

In a Debate Session at ISC 2021, experts discussed whether COVID-19 should be considered a coagulopathy or an endotheliopathy.

Numerous lines of evidence suggest that coagulation plays a key role in COVID-19, according to Dr Marcel Levi of University College Hospital in London, UK.

Studies show that patients with COVID-19 have increased D-dimer levels, a slight decrease in platelet count, and prolonged prothrombin time. D-dimer is particularly increased in critically ill patients and associated with poor outcomes.
